Make Mistakes—Just Not the Same One Twice

When you used up the last of the gauze pads, you didn’t tell anyone.

Now, your clinic is fresh out and starting a new week of treating patients.

Do you own up to your mistake or wave it off?

You’re the authority in your practice.

Your team looks to you for guidance, decisions, and expertise.

You will make mistakes—every leader does.

What matters is how you handle them.

Do you get defensive? Shift the blame? Or do you own it, fix it, and move forward?

Here’s my advice:

“You can make a mistake, but you can’t make the same mistake twice. Your staff will pick up on that. They’re good at that.”

Your team doesn’t expect perfection. They expect honesty.

If you never admit fault, you create a culture where mistakes are hidden, accountability is avoided, and trust erodes.

When you acknowledge a misstep and correct it, you:

  • Earn respect—Your team sees that integrity matters more than ego.

  • Strengthen your team—They feel safe owning their own mistakes and working toward solutions.

  • Model accountability—When leaders take responsibility, the whole team follows suit.

Humility isn’t a weakness. It’s a leadership superpower.

And when your team sees you handle mistakes with grace, they’ll do the same.

Make today the day you lead with humility.
