Mistakes won’t break you, but your reaction might

Your new office manager burst into your office in panicked tears.

She’s convinced she’s about to get fired.

A monumental mistake has been made—double payments were sent to half the staff while the other half didn’t get paid at all.

I had this very thing happen.

Yes, it was a disaster.

No, I didn’t lose my temper and send her packing.

I stayed calm, assured her that mistakes happen, and together, we made a plan to fix it.

Everyone got paid, albeit a little late.

Most importantly, the lesson was learned, trust remained intact, and she felt safe to come to me with future problems.

Mistakes are inevitable in your practice.

You will make them. No leader is perfect, and that’s okay.

Your team will make them. If you want them to take action and make decisions, errors will happen.

Every mistake is an opportunity to…

  • Teach problem solving

  • Build resilience

  • Strengthen team dynamics

The key is creating an environment where mistakes are owned, corrected, and met with support, not shame.

When you react with empathy and problem-solving, your team learns to approach their work with confidence and accountability.

Mistakes don’t define your practice.

How you and your team handle them does.

You’ve got this—and so does your team.
